Oxford,
PA All
Motor Nationals……Season opener, killer right out of the gate. Always
plagued with the threat of rain the first race out each season, the N/A
Shootout staff was pleasantly surprised to see 80 degree temperatures in
mid April at Cecil County Dragway and a beautiful day to hold the largest
event to date for the organization. A giant turnout in total car count and
a huge spectator base started the season off right.
Purnell
Body Shop class would see a record breaking 80 cars in the class. Brian
Cantrell would sit on top of the qualifying list with a perfect .000. The
racers would have to wade thru 7 rounds of stiff competition to crown a
winner of the first event as Rob Ward’s super clean S-10 would earn that
win with his final round pass against Mike Armetta with a heads up 10.00
index win 10.003 to a 10.02.
RAM
Racing Drag Radial would fill the void of a slightly smaller field with
spectacular performances and photo shoot exclusives. 2007 Drag Radial
King, I mean champ, would post his big numbers on the qualifying sheet as
Ron Rhodes throws up a 9.133 on the board after having an empty engine
compartment just days before. 9 Cars would do battle, and they would have
to survive such carnage as crowd pleasing Kurt Butler’s wheel standing
Nova as it took itself out of competition and Jeff Kinsler’s new found
Pontiac power would rip the driveshaft out of his Firebird for an early
demise for him and finally crown the winner in this category, Ron Rhodes
over Bill “Perky” Perkins, an incredible 9.086 to Perk’s 9.376. Going on
to set the first record of the season for Drag Radial.
G-Force
10.5 on the other hand was jam packed full of cars with 18 cars on the
qualifying list starting with John Langer in the number one seat with an
8.680 in his ‘69 Trans AM, followed by Charlie Booze’s 8.717 and class
sponsor Leonard Long 8.817. After 5 close rounds of competition it would
end up a well rehearsed battle in the past of the two small block fords
Leonard Long vs. Charlie Booze. Starting line advantage and a quicker et
would crown Charlie Booze the winner of the All Motor Nationals 10.5
Shootout with an 8.642 over Long’s 8.717 at 158mph.
Newly
Sponsored Liberty’s Gears PRO N/A would only see 5 cars towed to the
lanes for qualifying but soon to be outweighed by the outstanding
performances from the group. Jack Gaydosh’s Pro Stock GTO would capture
his first #1 qualifier of the season with an impressive 7.388 followed
closely by Randy Harshman’s, so brand new its not painted, 63 Corvette
with a blistering 7.497. The two would follow each other directly into the
finals after conquering many time NHRA record holder Sal Biondo, and
former Pro Stock Truck piloted by Tommy Miller. The final round of the day
would show the abuse the track had taken all day as the two leave the line
crossed up as they pedaled there way thru the traps it would come up Randy
Harshman as the winner of the Liberty’s Gears PRO N/A Shootout at Cecil
County Dragway.
Many
other events happening through out the day would include the 422 Allstars
Nostalgia Super Stocks and the giant field of time dated classics charging
down the quarter mile as well as the Muscle Car Showdown with the guys
from F.A.S.T.. This along with our annual car show and shine including the
likes of JDM E ngineering
and a fine group of Saleen’s and Lightning trucks showing their rides as
well as racing made this a fun in the sun day of exciting racing at the
“traction capital of the nation” Cecil County Dragway.
